Nepal Obstacle Course Races: Mud, Mountains, and Mayhem
OCR events in Nepal bring military-style challenge to the Himalayan foothills for all fitness levels.
Overview
Obstacle course racing (OCR) has arrived in Nepal. Events like the Himalayan OCR held annually near Dhulikhel (30 km from Kathmandu) combine trail running distances of 5 km to 15 km with 20 to 30 military-inspired obstacles: cargo net climbs, mud crawls under barbed wire, river crossings, log carries, rope walls, and balance beams. The setting โ forested foothills at 1,500 to 2,000 metres โ makes even the flat running sections aerobically demanding for non-acclimatised participants from lower altitudes. The Nepal OCR community is growing rapidly and recent editions have attracted 800 to 1,200 participants. Age categories start at 16 years and there are typically recreational (no time pressure, obstacles optional) and competitive heats. Entry costs are approximately NPR 3,500 to NPR 5,500 depending on distance. Registration opens 4 to 6 months before event day. All equipment is provided at each obstacle โ participants wear their own trail or athletic shoes plus clothing they do not mind destroying. Gloves are strongly recommended for rope and grip obstacles.
